Chorus pro Musica presents Joseph Haydn’s beloved oratorio The Seasons—a joyful exploration of nature, community, and the rhythms of rural life that inspired Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony.
About the Work
Completed in 1801, The Seasons was Haydn’s final major composition, written when the composer was 69 years old. This secular oratorio follows three country characters—Simon, Hanne, and Lucas—through Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter, painting vivid musical pictures of plowing fields, summer storms, autumn harvests, and winter firesides.
The score brims with Haydn’s famous wit and warmth: rousing hunting choruses, a celebrated “tipsy fugue” during the wine harvest, and moments of serene beauty that capture the wonder of the natural world.

Jordan Hall has been one of America’s premier concert venues since opening in 1903. A National Historic Landmark, this intimate 1,000-seat hall is celebrated worldwide for its exceptional acoustics—Yo-Yo Ma has praised its “unbelievable warmth and intimacy.” The golden oak interior and Renaissance-inspired organ make it an ideal setting for Haydn’s masterwork.
