Celebrate the season with Chorus pro Musica’s beloved holiday tradition — a rich, joyful program spanning musical traditions from around the world. Featuring works by composers of diverse backgrounds and voices, CpM weaves together the many ways cultures celebrate light, warmth, and togetherness during the winter season.

The Program (subject to change)

Balulalow
Gerald Custer
A tender lullaby to the infant Jesus, set to a 16th-century Scottish text. The title imitates the soft sound of a cradle song.

Carol of the Birds
Margaret Burk
A joyful carol in lilting 12/8 that tells the Christmas story from the birds’ point of view. A flowing piano accompaniment supports a melody that leaps upward with delight.

A Light
Carlos Simon
A contemporary setting of words based on Isaiah 9, about light breaking into darkness. Simon’s rich harmonies and expressive piano part make it both radiant and intimate

Al Hanissim (For the Miracles)
arr. Jacobson
A setting of the traditional Hebrew Chanukah prayer of thanks for the miracles and deliverance of the festival. Its rhythmic energy makes it a lively counterpart to the season’s quieter pieces.

Somewhere in My Memory (from Home Alone)
John Williams, arr. Mark Hayes
John Williams’s nostalgic theme from the 1990 film Home Alone, with lyrics by Leslie Bricusse. Mark Hayes’s choral arrangement captures the wistful warmth of holidays remembered.

Pastores
Carlos Cordero
A Christmas piece by Venezuelan-born composer Carlos Cordero honoring the shepherds who journeyed to Bethlehem.

A Child Is Born in Bethlehem
Jonathan Manners
A joyful carol with newly written verses by the composer. It opens in unison with the organ, softens into a tender unaccompanied verse, and builds to a triumphant close crowned by a soaring descant.

This Christmastide (Jessye’s Carol)
Donald Fraser
A gentle, lilting carol written as a gift for soprano Jessye Norman when she was hosting a Christmas party. It has become a perennial favorite for its timeless, welcoming warmth.

Blowin’ in the Wind
Bob Dylan, arr. Mac Huff
Dylan’s 1963 song became an anthem of the civil rights era and of the hope for peace and justice. Mac Huff’s choral arrangement keeps its searching questions at the center.

Night of Silence
Daniel Kantor
A contemporary meditation by Daniel Kantor on the stillness of Christmas night, often paired with “Silent Night.”
