Jamie Kirsch’s first season began with brilliant choral works aspiring to the heavens, perfectly suited to the resonant space of Old South Church and its magnificent Skinner organ. The chorus reaches for transcendence with anthems, hymns, and prayers, evokes earthly beauty with Estonia’s Veljo Tormis—considered one of the greatest living choral composers—and, with Eric Whitacre, imagines Leonardo da Vinci’s quest to soar into the skies.

Liszt: Pater Noster from Christus
Veljo Tormis: Autumn Landscapes (selections) (1964)
Tchaikovsky: Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, Nos. 13 and 14
Vaughan Williams: Lord, Thou Hast Been Our Refuge
Eric Whitacre: Leonardo Dreams of His Flying Machine (2001)
Gerald Finzi: Lo, the Full, Final Sacrifice

Boston Musical Intelligencer: “Programming for Sunday’s concert repertoire so unapologetically challenging for both chorus and audience, let alone executing at such high a level, augurs a very bright future indeed for CPM in the hands of Jamie Kirsch.”
