1. Message from Betsy

Dear CpM

It’s February! That means there are two rehearsals left before we start putting this together. I could tell that many had spent good time on preparing the new material for last week, thanks and bravo! Don’t however, neglect to review. Nothing is more frustrating than remaking the wheel. Repertoire for each Monday follows at bottom below.

Please have the following divisi and marks in your score before Monday’s rehearsal, it will save us oodles of time!

Looking forward!
Betsy

DIVISI at #87 Everyone sings everything! So you will constantly be moving from S to A to S or from B to T to B

Women
All women sing S line in a 3 part (HML) split, then 4 after #87 move to A line in a HML split. Continue throughout. In the instances of overlap, the low voice will sing the lowest note sounding which is always the last note of the phrase, whatever the staff, and H & M will move up (or down) to the next new phrase. The Lows will sing the new “Ho-” syllable on the lowest note, so we’ll hear lots of “Ho-sa, Ho-sa”. The Lows will then join the new phrase on the next possible note, usually a “-san”. So, for example, 7 measures before #88 the Low part will sing the F# “-na” even though it’s on Soprano staff, while the High & Middle parts will move to the A#– the new phrase on the alto line. The Lows then sing the “A” of “-san”. Same thing two bars later, Lows finish the phrase, Highs & Middles move up to next new phrase. Altos join for “-san-na” then drop out until the 2nd measure after #88, where they sing L (or Middle) of the Soprano line as before. At the 4th measure after #88 all women move to the Alto line and sing upper notes only, then move back to S for the next “Hosanna”. Same thing next phrase– upper notes only. Etc. At #89 sing own line, all S sing top notes, all A sing top notes.

Men
#87 all men sing Bass
7 measures after #87 All men sing 1st two notes of Bass line, then B1 and T 1 & 2 move up to T line in a 3 part split down form top: T1, T2, B1. This applies throughout the movement. B1 drop out after “na” and go back to B for next “sanctus”. Next phrase Ts sing T line, top two notes. B1 sing B for 1st two notes then immediate to T line for D# “na”, then rest on down beat and sing “-ctus” D-natural of Bass line. T2, 8 measures before #33 sing w/ B until #88. At #88 B 1 to bottom notes of T line as before. B1: 4 measures after #88 sing B line “Sa-” , then move to bottom notes of T line next bar. Sing B line “Sanctus” the next bar, stay on B line

1. Message from Betsy

Dear CpM:

Just a reminder: GO AFTER THESE NOTES & RHYTHMS! NOW!!
Remember my thirds speech? One third of you are doing great work, (thank you, bravo!!!), one third need to kick it up a notch, and one third needs a kick! This is not Lake Wobegon; though we may all be strong and good looking, we are not all above average. Assume you need to kick it up a notch, at least.

Schedule is below.

See you Monday,
Betsy

*This Monday, MEN START AT 7:00– Confutatis, #30-33, #131-end, #45-49*
Jan. 30: New: Movt 3, Movt. 6 #113-end; Review Movt. 1 & 2, all of Movt. 6

2. Interesting and Helpful Background Info on War Requiem

[a] Check out the Concert Resources!
http://www.choruspromusica.org/members/restricted/Mar2012/

To start with, there is the text and translation, a recording, and a link to a very interesting podcast (a Fresh Air show of 2011) that describes the “Great War” where Wildred Owen served. (The podcast is about 40 min, so it’s not a quick listen.) There are also links to *cyberbass audio files*, an 11-minute documentary about the work, and various program notes.

Thanks to Bess and Mariflor for locating the cyberbass files, and to Peter Pulsifer for compiling all the background info and links!

[b] from Jeff Pearson, re: mp3 rehearsal parts for purchase:
“For those of you looking for some help to learn the Britten, and are willing to part with some cash.
Visit: http://www.choraline.com/store/singers-choraline-rehearsal-cd-mp3/britten-war-requiem. [Separate SATB parts in mp3 format: download immediately for $12.62, or order a CD for $18.94] I find them terribly helpful, ready and loaded on my iPod and have learned more of the Britten in 2 days than the last 2 weeks (besides rehearsal). I don’t play piano, so for me to struggle and muck along trying to play these parts was not helpful. These are excellent, simply for getting the notes in your head.”
(Thanks, Jeff!)
